iCheckbook and iCloud. . .

iCheckbook uses a native database on your iOS device to maintain account, transaction & recurring transaction information.  It would be nice for a user who has more than one iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad) to be able to manage this information on any device and have the updates appear on another.  We have investigated using iCloud to support this syncing, but have decided not to use it for many reasons.

  • iCloud is only available on iOS devices.  We want to be able to sync information between iOS and Android devices whenever they are connected to the internet.
  • There are so many ways for the iCloud sync to fail which are difficult to troubleshoot.  We want your financial information to be 100% accurate all of the time and incorporating iCloud will not guarantee this level of reliability.
  • iCloud is just not ready for primetime and does not live up to its promise!

To sum up the bad news: we will revisit iCloud as a syncing option as Apple continues to refine it, but at this time we are not planning on incorporating it into iCheckbook.

Now for the good news: we are developing iCheckbook+ which will include a fully integrated sync feature.  This will enable all your iOS and Android devices to be in sync real-time.  There will be an online and offline mode so if you do not have a network connection you can still use the app to manage your finances.  The information you entered offline will sync the next time your device is connected to the internet.  Best of all, if two or more people are entering or updating information, the other person(s) will automatically get the updates within seconds.
